Prep ยท Builder

Monsters of your own, balanced by the book.

Pick a role and a challenge rating, or a creature level, and the Builder sets the numbers from the system's own benchmarks. Everything stays editable, and a live stat block shows exactly what the Library will show.

What it does

What it does, one piece at a time.

Roles and bands

Seven role chips (Balanced, Brute, Soldier, Skirmisher, Sniper, Caster, Mook) set a band for hit points, armor class, saves, attack, damage and spell DC. Click a band to cycle it from Extreme to High, Moderate or Low.

  • Moderate is the system's own benchmark row, so Balanced is the plain benchmark creature
  • Every number stays editable
  • Move away from a role and it reads Custom mix

A live stat block

The preview is drawn on the system's own sheet, exactly as the Library will show the saved creature: serif and deep red for fifth edition, sans and deep green for the second system.

  • Hit dice follow the creature's size, and average to its hit points
  • The proficiency bonus is filled in for the rating
  • The parse note says the creature was forged from benchmarks

Attacks, abilities and spells

Attacks are a list of cards: name, melee or ranged, bonus, reach or range, damage in as many parts and types as it deals, and any rider with its saving throw. Multiattack is written from each attack's count.

  • Traits, actions, reactions and legendary actions, each with what it carries
  • Spellcasting blocks with a DC and spell attack the Builder can suggest
  • A spell name is offered from the Library, so it links to its sheet

Start from any creature

Any Library creature opens here with Use as template. Its whole record comes along, and it saves as a new creature with a "Started from" note. The original stays untouched.

  • Open in Builder edits a custom creature and keeps its identity through a rename
  • Save to Custom, and it appears in the Library, the Encounters roster, the Tracker and the Board
  • The draft is kept with the session, so a reload loses nothing

See it work

A role decides where the strength goes.

Choose a role and each stat's band moves with it. Change one band by hand and the creature reads Custom mix.

With the other tools

Where the work goes next.

Good to know

What it does not do.

  • A creature belongs to one system. Switching system asks first, unless the creature is still blank.
  • There is no conversion between challenge rating and level, and no power comparison across systems.

Questions

About Builder.

What can I build?

A creature for either system: fifth edition from challenge rating 0 to 30, the second system from level โˆ’1 to 25.

What do the roles do?

A role sets a band for each stat. A Brute soaks punishment and hits like a falling wall, but is easy to hit. A Soldier holds the front line: armored, accurate, hard to walk past. A Caster wins on saves and spell DCs rather than armor or a weapon, and a Mook is threatening in numbers only. You can change any band by hand.

Can I change the numbers after applying benchmarks?

Yes. Every field stays editable, and Apply benchmarks only fills what you ask it to.

Can I start from an existing creature?

Yes. Use as template on any Library record brings its whole record into the Builder as a new creature, and the original is untouched.

Where do my creatures go?

Save to Custom puts them in your library. They show under the Custom filter and can be used anywhere a Library creature can.

Will my creature replace a library one?

Never. A custom record cannot take a library record's id, and the server checks it.

Does the draft survive a reload?

Yes. It is kept with the session. New creature clears it.
